A great deal of academic research points to the disadvantages of education attainment, social, nutritional and economic status of children from poor backgrounds who are on free school meals (FSM).

ippr north Research shows that "there is a significant obesity gap: with almost one in five (19.3 per cent) children living in the most deprived areas suffering obesity, compared with just under one in seven (13.8 per cent) of those in the least deprived areas."

In Inner London 71,490 Primary children and Nursery Schools receive FSM and 35,100 in Secondary schools.
